As the river settled back after the weekend "rains" the Tongariro switched on big time.

By Sunday flows had peaked at around 230 cumecs. Not a huge fresh, but enough to get some fish moving and displace some of the millions of aquatic insects that populate the river bed. Below the surface it must have been like a "bug soup" and the trout were quick to take advantage.

With the flows holding steady at 34 cumecs and the river running that lovely milky green color I fished the town pools with Mike and Grant yesterday morning.

Conditions couldn't have been any better and the action never stopped.

It didn't matter if you were nymphing with the indicator, dry and dropper or "Czech style" we all caught fish.

I mentioned last time that it looks as if we're getting some early autumn rainbows running this year ... and that does seem to be the case.

No monster rainbows yesterday but some of the fresh run fish were sort of three to four pound.

I love fishing for browns and the next few months offer anglers a very real chance of bagging one of these awesome fish.

There are many well known places along the river that traditionally throw up good browns every year but for the next few weeks you won't go far wrong fishing the town pools.

I'll let some of the pics from yesterday tell the tale.

Expect more excellent fishing for the rest of the week with the added bonus of a return to summer temperatures again tomorrow.

Boaties are reporting some impressive condition fish in the lake and although its very early days I have a feeling 2017 could be one to remember.

See you out there

Nice fish Mike. I have to wait until October before I can have my next run at the fish. I've just had my left knee replaced so mobility and stability will need a few months to allow me to face the Tongariro boulders. In the meantime I sit and read reports and keep dreaming! Btw my partner Pauline used to breed Border collies so she is happy to look at Blue while I look St fish in your photos. Cheers, Murray.
