SO HOW GOOD ARE NEW ZEALAND WEATHER FORECASTS?

Although many parts of New Zealand unfortunately bore the full brunt of ex-tropical cyclone Cook it actually wasn't too bad here in Turangi. The predicted record rainfall and storm force winds never came too much and work on "the Ark" was halted Friday evening.

The Tongariro peaked at just over 80 cumecs and although it was running brown due to some slips upstream, by the next day it was perfectly fishable.

Those flows have now halved and we have a mixture of sunshine and heavy showers so far today... with much more settled weather on the cards for most of next week.

Its flowing that nice milky green color again so it bodes well for the week ahead. Expect more good browns and possibly some of those better rainbows that the "boaties" have had to themselves for the past couple of months.

We get several of these "weather scares" every year but because of our geographical position in central north island they often fail to materialize...much to the chagrin of local businesses and motel owners. I'm as guilty as the next person of having a good ole moan at "Dan the weatherman" when he gets it wrong. So how good are New Zealand weather forecasts and is it really his fault? ... of course its not but he or his colleagues "get it" anyway whenever they mess up. Have a read of this How good are New Zealand weather forecasts taken from NIWA dated 2003 which goes a little way to explaining the complexities and pit-falls of having one of the most thankless jobs in the world.
