It was no surprise that the Tongariro switched on after the fresh. I got on the river as the flows dipped below eighty and hit fish straight away.

With the river carrying plenty of color, fly choice was easy. And for most of the day I fished egg patterns in places away from the main current.

First port of call was an empty Braids but it wasn't long before I had some company.

Its been a long time coming but the river is finally gaining the upper hand here.

The fish are back and so are the anglers chasing them. And during the morning I bumped into some old faces I hadn't seen for quite a while in this stretch.

Its still nowhere near its former self but at least its worth a try now...and with every passing flood it should just get better and better.

The spate conditions have moved fish around a bit. And as you'd expect now, most anglers "catch" consists of a mixed bag of kelts, spawning jacks and chrome colored hens.

There's noticeably more anglers around this year enjoying the improved fishing ....so its little wonder there's a really good buzz on the river.

Of course its a double edged sword because when any river begins to fire, word soon gets out and I tried unsuccessfully to get into a couple of spots yesterday on my way upriver.

Luckily the Tongariro is a big piece of water so there's always somewhere you can slot in. And once levels fall back, getting at some of the less well known spots will also be an option.

However I have a feeling there'll be an awful lot of alarms set early this coming weekend.

I know mine will be!

An unsettled spell of weather for the week ahead. This should provide perfect conditions as the predicted rain and heavy showers continue to put some color and volume into the Tongariro. But if the sun comes out and it does clear a little take the globug off occasionally and stick on a green caddis.

Its going to be good out there ... have a great week guys.

Tight lines

Mike
