After the deep low barreled across North Island last night and most of today, the Tongariro is currently flowing at over 700 cumecs!

Floods of this size are classed as a once every five year event so expect some changes out there after this.

It doesn't seem to matter when Sean pays me a visit ...the river always blows. But he really did it this time with this biggie!

Fortunately we got a couple of days fishing in before the flood and yesterday he landed eleven out of the fourteen he hooked. Mainly around town and the lower river.

Although the weather warnings remain in place until midnight tonight they've forecast an improving situation over the weekend.
What usually happens after a big fresh like this, is that as things begin to settle back, initially levels drop quickly. But then flows will stick before falling again. Looking at the graph they look to have peaked and are on the way down. More showers overnight but with no significant rain on the cards the river should be fishable again in a couple of days. Keep an an eye on the graph but by Sunday it'll probably be ok.

I quite enjoy exploring the river after a big flood. I've no doubt there will be changes...some good...some not so good. But as flows return to normal it should be all on again, especially once they hit the forty cumec mark and the color begins to gradually drop out. I'll be out there before that, fishing the margins and side channels for browns.

The fishing just before the storm was pretty good and Sean and Luke are chomping at the bit to get back out there. In the meantime however sales of bourbon in Turangi have rocketed.

Keep safe out there

Mike
