Anglers have taken the odd good fish as the runs have continued this week. They are still flying through but the kelts that eat anything resembling food are every where and its been a lot of fun catching them. If your prepared to set the alarm to be out and about at dawn being first through will usually pay off and you won't go far wrong using globugs if there are also fresh fish around. Andrew Watt who normally fishes and guides in the Manawatu got these early in one of the town pools. I stayed on a bit longer changing methods as soon as the fan-tails made an appearance. Things are settling down again after the high levels and colored conditions of the past week or so. The Tongariro peaked at three hundred plus, then after it had dropped rose again a few days later to over sixty cumecs. This doesn't seem to have done that much damage to the insect life below the surface and the last couple of days have seen fish taking advantage of reasonable mayfly hatches. One of my regulars rang me earlier and told me he had taken some nice fish for the smoker on an emerger pattern and he didn't get on the water until this afternoon. Earlier in the week the middle and upper reaches gave up some good fish especially around Boulder Reach, Big Bend and the Boulder Pool. A few spots around town were also proving popular with fish moving quickly through the Braids. I fished with "Big John" again on Tuesday and we had some fun in the Stag and above taking several hungry kelts and a couple of fresher jacks gorging on mayfly nymphs. We ...

Mixed fortunes on the river this week depending when you fished. The first part of last weekend saw plenty of anglers trying the upper river pools but it was the Braids that again proved the more consistent. On a drizzly Sunday morning I tried the middle reaches. It was really quiet and I saw no one else other than a couple in the Hydro as I headed a bit further up. The fishing was also "quiet" so later I returned to town and walked up to Judges but I'm afraid it was again a disappointment, although this was set to change later in the week. With the forecast for rain and plenty of it, I picked ...
