Beautiful Spring weather in Turangi today and pleasantly warm once the sun chased away the early morning chill. I didn't get to the river until 10.00 am and with no cars parked in Koura street decided to head to Judges. Walking down the track I was surprised how few anglers there were ... just one in the Breakfast pool. Even my favourite town pool was empty and I didn't see a sole the whole time I was there. Anglers may have been thin on the ground but the fish certainly weren't. The Tongariro is firing at the moment and I had a great day moving up and down the pool chopping and changing metho ...

Thinking about it I could have changed the date on the last few reports and kept posting the same one. Nothing has changed and you just can't miss on the Tongariro at the moment. With plenty of hungry kelts in the river and more fish continuing to move up, everything is working, and most anglers are enjoying some great sport. I had a session with Glenn Goode and we hit fish from town to Boulder Reach. I think I may even have converted him to czech nymphing, despite his initial reluctance to try it. Another pretty good week on the Tongariro and not that many anglers around considering its the school holidays. But I suspect the tricky wind and heavy rain over the last few days has something to do with that. There's been fresh fish showing up all week but not in big numbers. And once again a lot of them seem to be those smaller hens. I notice most of these have been ripe with eggs and even if you're careful when returning them, often times they'll begin to drop their precious cargo before they swim off. This probably explains why they're not hanging about. And I don't think I've fished anyw ...
