Some great fishing on the Tongariro since the last report. The recent spells of heavy rain saw the river go up and down more often than a toilet seat and the 477 cumec flood at the beginning of the week definitely got some fish moving. The next couple of months usually signals a decline in the numbers of browns figuring in the reports but at the moment they're still well worth targeting. These big fish have a "difficult to catch" reputation but if you look for them in the right water at the right time they're more obliging than you may think. HEAVY RAIN WARNING AREA/S AFFECTED From Waitomo to Taupo and Tongariro across to the Headwaters of the Whanganui River FORECAST Heavy rain is expected to ease late this morning. After almost 24 hours of relentless rain the Tongariro peaked overnight at 477 cumecs. By the time I drove south into Turangi this morning there was already some surface flooding on SH1 but the river had dropped significantly and the flows were reading ...

Again the lower river and town pools have been producing the goods with fit hard fighting rainbows coming through. These fish are some of the best I've caught for a few years and that bodes well because its still early days as far as the winter runs go. ...

After heavy overnight rain and showers during the weekend, the Tongariro peaked at fifty plus cumecs. Its since dropped back to 38 cumecs with a hint of color. The remaining showers are forecast to clear throughout the day with cooler south to south west winds gradually picking up. The river looks great but there weren't too many anglers out and about this morning, mind you that cold gusty southerly had a lot to do with that. The Bridge pool has been getting its fair share of attention for most of the week and talking to some of the guys making up "the gauntlet" on Saturday they told me they'd ...
