First of all apologies for the lack of reports but I've had some computer problems that had to be sorted out. Now that's done we can pick up where we left off last time. The Tongariro has been pretty consistent. The unsettled and very wet Spring weather has seen flows fluctuate almost daily and its been a while since they dropped below thirty cumecs. Although the runs are not as intense as they were a few weeks ago, fish are still moving up. So there are plenty of trout to keep anglers happy. And because the river has retained some color both nymphers and wet liners have done well in the ideal ...

Blue Pool access?

Hi Mike, There has been a lot of comment about access to the Blue Pool in the last few weeks, sparked by the appearance of posts on the entrance to the “Blue Pool Road”. The first point to make is that it isn’t a legal road at all, rather an access track which was until recently maintained by the Department of Corrections so that anglers could access the upper Tongariro. With the closure of the Rangipo Prison and its subsequent sale, the Blue Pool access way is now on private land. A little bit of a slow down in the fishing since the last report. There's still plenty of fish to be caught...and still plenty of anglers chasing them but its likely the main runs probably peaked mid August. Don't put your rods away yet though because there's a lot more fantastic fishing to come over the next couple of months particularly either side of any rain. However the numbers of fresh run fish will gradually diminish and recovering kelts will figure more often in anglers catches. Last nights torrential downpours have continued on and off this morning.
